Why we recommend this wine
We holidayed in the area many years ago and, unlike many holiday wines that don’t work at home, the wines of Montepulciano have always been a favourite of ours and this is no exception. This wine rounds out our fabulous collection of Tuscan Sangiovese wines – a Brunello (click here), a Chianti Classico (click here) and a Montepulciano.

The wine
A blend of Sangiovese 90%, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon making up the balance. 16 hectares of 20 year old vines on South-West facing slopes, 300/400 meters above sea level, are used for this wine. The bunches are hand selected and then the grapes are de-stemmed, soft pressed and subsequently fermented in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature with the addition of selected yeasts. The maceration lasts 16 days. Ageing takes place in 5 hl French barrels for 12 months, followed by at least 6 months of bottle ageing.

The wine estate
During the mid-70s a few friends from the Zurich area, with a common passion for wine, began to regularly import “table wine” from Montepulciano. With time, the number of enthusiasts grew and the friends felt the desire to own their own wine estate. In 1987 the opportunity arose: a wine estate in Montepulciano. Canneto AG, the founding company established in Zurich, took over the Azienda Agricola Canneto in Montepulciano. Canneto wine estate is situated on the western side of Montepulciano, near the splendid church of San Biagio and has a long wine-making tradition. Having purchased it, the new owners renovated the buildings respecting their original purpose, building a new cellar, buying machinery and equipment, taking care of and renewing the vineyards and olive trees. The farm consists of 48 hectares, 30 of which are under vine. A further 4 hectares are planted with olive trees to produce Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Careful vinification, the choice of the vineyard location, the bottling, are some of the aspects which receive their utmost care and attention. “Every year we try to do better.”
