Tasting notes
Fresh and full of berry fruit but not heavy with dry tannins ensuring age ability. Ideal with tomato-based dishes and hard cheeses.

Why we recommend this wine
When we were in Tuscany we really enjoyed their Sangiovese wines especially those from Montepulciano, along with Montalcino and Chianti Classio (examples of all of which we stock). This is an excellent example of what we liked.

The wine
From Sangiovese Prugnolo Gentile vineyards where the fruit of one vine produces one 750ml bottle. Fermented in wood and aged in large and small oak barrels for 18 months it then spends at least 6 months in the bottle.

The wine estate
Salco means willow tree in the ancient Tuscan language. It is an important plant through the ages as its branches were used to bind the vines. Salcheto is the name of the stream that springs from the foot of the town of Montepulciano and winds through a valley where willows abound. Their approach is focused on drinkability and aromatic accuracy, with winemaking that is sulfite free and uses indigenous yeasts; an “off-grid” cellar; an integrated environmental estate management model (Carbon footprint, Water, Biodiversity).

Food and wine
Vino Nobile is a robust wine which is best appreciated with red meat, grills, stews and game. Excellent with Pienza pecorino cheese and all hard cheeses, it also goes well with vegetarian dishes including eggplant or radicchio. The bottle should be opened a couple of hours before drinking. Did you know?
Salcheto was the first company in the world to have certified the carbon footprint of a bottle of wine (according to ISO 14064 standard, in 2010). On their website is a CO2 calculator that interactively works out the emissions related to each bottle of wine from the vineyard all the way through the location where it is uncorked.
