Intense, minerally, crisp and off-dry. Ideal as an aperitif or with fish and white meats.
Why we recommend this wine
Many years ago whilst visiting Alsace we took a detour to the Mosel river in Germany to compare their Rieslings with those in Alsace. We found that the top end Rieslings were excellent and although described as off-dry they were a lot dryer than that.
The wine
Classic German riesling, from a parcel of stock which was sidelined during the pandemic and quietly got on with evolving. Its mature fruit lifted by clean-cut citrus and a touch of spice makes it a fine treat. Red slate is quite rare on the Mosel. The wines have a softer, rounder structure than those grown on blue slate.
The wine estate
Situated on Germany’s Mosel River among some of the world’s most treasured vineyards, the Dr. Loosen estate has been in the same family for more than 200 years.
When Ernst Loosen assumed ownership in 1988, he realized that, with ungrafted vines averaging 60 years old in some of Germany’s top-rated vineyards, he had the raw materials to create stunningly intense, world-class Rieslings. To achieve this he changed the estate’s vineyard practices to dramatically reduce crop size and moved to sustainable viticulture complying with strict German environmental regulations. And he turned to gentler cellar practices that would allow the wine to develop its full potential with a minimum of technological meddling.
