Why we recommend this wine
Château La Croix St Estephe is the second wine of Château Le Crock. We have found that in good vintages the second wine is good value for money as it is of the standard of the first wine from a less good vintage. This La Croix is no exception.
We visited have visited Château Le Crock several times (see our trip notes here) and were really impressed with their wines and the Nurture Nature approach that they use is in line with what we look for in a winemaker.

The wine
In most vintages this wine is about 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot with the rest being Cabernet Franc with a touch of Petit Verdot. To get the best from the wine, decant about an hour ahead of drinking. This will keep for many years to come.

The wine estate
Bought by the Cuvelier Family at 1903, Château Le Crock is situated in the Médoc, in Saint Estèphe. The Château dates from 1750 and is surrounded by magnificent gardens. The vines stretch over 33 hectares (82 acres) and touch two of the most prestigious châteaus of the appellation, Château Cos d’Estournel and Château Montrose. The Cuvelier family business was founded as wine merchants in 1804. Today their holdings include the top Château Léoville Poyferré.

Did you know?
Second wines are made from the grapes of young vines that are planted to replace a vine that has died or is not producing the quality or quantity that it should. The other source of wine is from barrels that did not make the final selection for the first wine.
