The wine
Bouchard buys in must and young wines from vine growers and contacts in the industry that have been developed over time and helped to achieve Bouchard’s quality standards. All the grapes are grown in Premier Cru vineyards. The wine spends 9 to 10 months in French oak (up to 15% new oak) and then 3 to 4 months in stainless steel tanks before bottling.

The wine estate
Bouchard is part of the Henriot Champagne group. The late Joseph Henriot took the reins of this then small Champagne house when he was only 21 and grew it to a sizeable enterprise. In the mid 80s he took a job as president of Veuve Clicquot during a surge of expansion at the brand. Louis Vuitton purchased Veuve in 1987, shortly after LV merged with Moët Hennessey, and Henriot found himself an executive in the world’s top luxury goods company. Henriot decided it was time for him to depart in 1994. He kept the Henriot brand, but most of its assets remained with LVMH. The next year he reportedly paid $50 million for the winery and vineyards Bouchard Père et Fils, which had begun selling wine in 1731 but had fallen on hard times. “How could I turn it down?” he said in 2008. “How often does a Burgundy producer with 320 acres of land—including 30 acres of grand cru vineyards and 183 acres of premier cru vineyards—come up for sale?” Henriot invested heavily, improving vineyard management and building a gleaming new winery. Quality improved and so did sales. In 1998, he bought William Fèvre in nearby Chablis. Quite a remarkable wine story!
