Tasting notes
Gewurztraminer is probably the most easily recognisable wine from its aroma of exotic fruits (pineapple, lychees) and roses. Most times it is just off dry and goes well with seafood and chicken curries.

Why we recommend this wine
This is a good example of what Gewurztraminer should taste like and if you haven’t tasted one before we thoroughly recommend that you do. We visited the Domaine in 2012 to select our Alsace wines (see here) and again in 2017.

The wine
This is a classic gewurztraminer. On the eye, brilliant and crystal-clear shades of light green. Youthful, fresh and flowery (rose and acacia) aromatic expression combined with the exotic fruit taste of pineapple and the subtle hints of oriental spices characteristic of Gewürztraminer. On the palate, the feel is supple and tender, with good structure and balanced proportions. The 2017 was awarded a Médaille d’Or/Gold Medal at the Concours des Grands Vins Blancs du Monde - Great White Wines of the World Competition

The wine estate
The Bott Frères family of Ribeauvillé established their domaine in 1835. They “do not manufacture wine, they cultivate it. The greatest care is given to the grape, from ground to glass. The planting, the ploughing and the treatment (of the vines) are practiced in full respect of the environment. The grape harvest is undertaken manually and the output is monitored to produce high quality wines. Ageing takes place in century old oak casks.”

Food and wine
The exotic flavours and aromas compliment the spices in curry and it has the body and acidity to match the chillies. Also goes well with soft cheeses, particularly the salty, blue ones. Also see our guide to pairing food and wine here.

Did you know?
Gewurztraminer is an easy grape to recognize in the vineyard because of its pink to red skin colour.
