Tasting notes
A generous, rich wine, with an emerald-gold colour. The classic lemoniness of chardonnay is rounded with hints of hazelnuts and toased almonds. A delightful aperitif, it goes well with shellfish and line fish with lemon.
Why we recommend this wine
We visited this part of Macon several times and were always impressed with the upper-end chardonnays of which this is a great example.
The wine
Made in stainless vats to ensure that the fruit comes through. The grapes are on average 50 years old and grown on chalky-clay soils that are very rich in limestone giving a full, rich wine.
The wine estate
We visited the domaine in many years ago (see our trip report here). We were impressed with the wines in general. This is a family owned business with the 4th and 5th generation now involved.

Food and wine
Although rich this is not a heavy wine and thus the food that it accompanies should not be heavy either. Shellfish, line fish that is not too gamey and white meats are perfect. Also see our guide to pairing food and wine here.
Did you know?
The name Pouilly-Fuissé comes from the neighbouring villages of Fuissé and Solutré-Pouilly, both of Roman origin and growing chardonnay. It should not be confused with the village Pouilly Fumé which is on the Loire and produces Sauvignon Blanc.
