Tasting notes
Citrus flavors (grapefruit, lemon) with a touch of minerality that is ideal with fish and goat or sheep’s cheese.
Why we recommend this wine
We have visited Alsace many times and love their Rieslings. This is a great example made by a family-owned winemaker that farms organically.
The wine
Riesling is one of the “great” white grape varieties; on the Alsace side of the Rhine river it is made dry. Its late rising nature allows it to laugh at spring frosts, and to take full advantage of the sunny late seasons. The 2018 vintage has a bright pale yellow color. On the nose, the aromas are fine, predominantly fruity. On the palate it is lively with citrus flavors (grapefruit, lemon). The minerality is still discreet and will intensify in the coming months, however the first notes of salinity are already there. A gastronomic wine!
The wine estate
Located at the foot of the fortified church of Hunawihr, three generations of the Mittnacht family have been making spot-on, expressive, beautifully made wines from traditional Alsace varietals. Two cousins Christophe and Marc Mittnacht are now in charge. The domaine is certified organic and biodynamic which they believe should ensure a calm and stable vine that posesses a natural resistance to pests. A vine in harmony will have a moderate yield of mature fruit that gives a grape must that offers balance and depth. The domaine has 11 hectares of excellent parcels between Ribeauville and Riquewihr, which are the source of Mittnacht’s terrific varietally labeled wines, holdings in Grand Cru Rosacker.

Ask almost any wine aficiando what their favourite wine is and invariably Riesling is the answer.
