Guy Allion 2022 Domaine du Haut Perron Sauvignon Blanc

£10.30
Tasting notes
A nose of sweet cut grass with some flowers. The palate is herbs, flowers, passion fruit with a has a long crisp finish. Really remarkable value for money. It is reminiscent of a Pouilly Fume but more flowery and less minerally. Best served as an aperitif it can also complement asparagus and seafood dishes.

Why we recommend this wine
A small family-owned winemaker who farms along organic lines and produces excellent value of money wines. Hard to beat!

The wine
The vines for the Sauvignon Blanc grapes grow on the flinty banks of the river Cher. These slopes have an exposure to both the southwest and southeast. The soil is a mixture of clay-limestone and shallow clay-siliceous. After picking the grapes are pressed and the juice fermented in temperature-controlled tanks. The wine is aged on its lees for several months before bottling to provide added complexity.
This is really more reminiscent of a New Zealand Sauvignon than one from the Loire. Do not serve too cold (that is, let it warm up for 15 mins or so after you take it out of the fridge).

The wine estate
Domaine Haut Perron’s vineyards are in the heart of the Touraine vineyards, near the small town of Thésée la Romaine. This town is surrounded by the most prestigious Châteaux de la Loire; Chenonceau, Amboise, Chaumont, Blois and Chambord are only kilometers away. The family have been making wine for generations and are certified producers under the Terra Vitis code, that is, along organic lines.

Food and wine
With the acidity and fruit, in addition to asparagus and seafood dishes it will also stand up the chili-based dishes. Also see our guide to pairing food and wine here.

Did you know?
The Loire river is home to three white wine varieties. In broad terms, from its source to just East of Tours, Sauvignon Blanc reigns, then Chenin Blanc moves in from Vouvray, past Angers down to Savennières. From Nantes down to the sea, Mellon de Bourgogne, which is used to produce Muscadet, is the lead grape.
