Izadi 2018 Reserva

£13.95
Tasting notes
Evocative of hot summer days, full of fruit and the spiciness of new American oak. Excellent with the usual suspects, roasts and grills but also with chorizo and tomato based dishes.

Why we recommend this wine
A premium wine from a top rated bodega. We visited Izadi during our travels in Rioja (read our travel notes here) and were impressed by the quality of their premium wines. It is everything one would expect from a modern-style Rioja.

This wine
The reserva wine is made 100% from 45 year old Tempranillo vines. It has a deep ruby colour, with tons of fruit on the nose and palate; clean oak notes with the juicy black fruit and fine tannins.

The wine estate
Formed in 1987, Izadi is not exactly a family business but is still a small business owned by the Antón family together with a group of friends and business people from nearby Vitoria. Their focus has always been on producing premium wines for the restaurant trade – so definitely food friendly wines. Their success has enabled them to establish wineries in other wine regions.

Food and wine
The spiciness and dark red fruits taste make this this ideal accompaniment for tapas style dishes with their tomato and hot chorizo spices but they also, of course, go well with grilled and roast meats and hearty stews. Also see our guide to pairing food and wine here.

Did you know?
The Izadi winery is built into the side of a ravine where they use the 50m drop to have 5 levels for wine making taking full advantage of gravity to softly handle their wines; literally grapes in at the top and bottled wine out the bottom!
